National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day

Every year on 22 December, we celebrate National Mathematics Day in honour of the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. His extraordinary genius and contributions to number theory, infinite series, and mathematical analysis continue to inspire scholars around the world even today.

In 2012, on the occasion of Ramanujan’s 125th birth anniversary, the Government of India declared this day as National Mathematics Day to promote a culture of logical thinking and appreciation for mathematics among students. The celebration reminds us that mathematics is not merely a subject of calculations, but a language of patterns that helps us understand the world around us.

The school library plays a meaningful role in enriching mathematical curiosity. On this day, students explore books related to mathematical puzzles, biographies of mathematicians, mathematical history, and problem-solving strategies. Activities such as quiz competitions, puzzles, math storytelling, and hands-on demonstrations encourage learners to see mathematics as a creative and enjoyable discipline.

Srinivasa Ramanujan’s journey—from self-taught prodigy in Tamil Nadu to a legendary figure at Cambridge University—teaches us that talent, determination, and passion can break every barrier. His contributions, including the famous number 1729, continue to fascinate generations of mathematicians.

Let us celebrate National Mathematics Day by embracing curiosity, questioning patterns, and developing a love for numbers. Through reading, exploring, and reflecting, may our library continue to be a space where mathematical imagination grows and inspires young minds.
