Rastriya Ekta Diwas 2025

National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas)

Date and Background

National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is celebrated every year on 31st

October to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of

India’s most respected freedom fighters and the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister and

Home Minister. The day was officially introduced by the Government of India in 2014 with

an aim to honor Patel’s unparalleled contribution towards the political integration of India.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, often hailed as the “Iron Man of India”, played a decisive role in

unifying the nation soon after independence. His firm leadership and diplomatic skills led to

the successful merger of over 560 princely states into the Indian Union — a monumental

task that laid the foundation for a united and strong India.

Significance of the Day

National Unity Day stands as a powerful reminder of the strength of unity and integrity in

maintaining the peace and stability of the country. It emphasizes the idea that India’s

diversity is its greatest strength, and unity among its people is essential for national

progress.

The day inspires citizens, especially the younger generation, to uphold the spirit of oneness

and brotherhood, rising above caste, religion, language, and regional barriers. It serves as an

occasion to reaffirm our dedication to building a harmonious and integrated nation in line

with Patel’s vision.

Celebrations and Activities

Across India, schools, colleges, government offices, and public institutions organize

various events to mark the day.

Some common activities include:

• “Run for Unity” — a nationwide marathon symbolizing the message of unity and

collective strength.

• Pledge-taking ceremonies, where people reaffirm their commitment to national

integration.

• Cultural programs, exhibitions, and debates highlighting Patel’s contribution and

the value of unity.

• Essay writing, poster making, and quiz competitions for students to spread

awareness about Sardar Patel’s life and ideals.

In addition, government officials, armed forces, and community groups often participate in

unity marches to showcase solidarity and patriotism.

Statue of Unity

One of the most remarkable tributes to Sardar Patel’s legacy is the Statue of Unity, the

world’s tallest statue at 182 meters, located in Kevadia, Gujarat. It was inaugurated on 31st

October 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The statue not only celebrates Patel’s

vision and leadership but also stands as a symbol of India’s unity, strength, and resilience.

Patel’s Vision for India

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel envisioned an India that was united in purpose, action, and spirit.

He believed that true freedom could only be achieved through national integration and

collective responsibility. His famous statement, “Manpower without unity is not a strength

unless it is harmonized and united properly, then it becomes a spiritual power,” continues to

inspire generations even today.

Message of the Day

National Unity Day encourages every Indian to value and protect the rich cultural diversity

of our country while promoting peace, brotherhood, and social harmony. It reminds us that

despite differences in language, religion, and culture, we all share a common identity as

Indians.

Conclusion

National Unity Day is not merely a commemoration of a great leader’s birthday; it is a

national movement for unity, strength, and nation-building. It reminds us of Sardar

Patel’s immense contribution to the creation of a united India and encourages every citizen to

work together for the progress, integrity, and peace of our beloved nation.
